Maximize Your Solar Investment: A Guide to Optimal SEG Tariffs

Are you harnessing the power of the sun to generate electricity for your home through solar panels? Did you know that you can also monetize your excess solar energy by selling it back to the National Grid? However, maximizing your returns requires careful consideration of the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) Tariff you choose.

With a plethora of SEG tariffs available, each with its own unique terms and conditions, finding the ideal fit for your household can be a daunting task. This comprehensive guide will help you navigate the landscape and identify the most lucrative export rates for various solar setups.

To qualify for these lucrative tariffs, you’ll need a smart meter and MCS Certified documentation verifying your solar installation’s certification. Importantly, whether you’ve made a significant upfront investment in solar panels or opted for a subscription-based model, these SEG tariffs are accessible to all solar homeowners.

Understanding the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) Scheme

What are the best Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) Tariffs?

The best overall Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) Tariff is Solar Savings Exclusive from Good Energy in February 2025.

With this SEG tariff, customers who choose Good Energy as their energy supplier can typically gain 40p for every kWh (kilowatt-hour) of solar electricity they export back to the National Grid.

After that, it’s Intelligent Octopus Flux, which pays an average rate of 29.4p, but remember it is a time-of-use tariff with a peak rate between 4-7pm, and depending on when you export your energy back to the National Grid depends on what this SEG tariff pays you, so, if you’re on this tariff investigate it carefully to get the most bang for your buck.

Overall, this works out better than the next best SEG tariff, which is E.ON’s Next Export Premium v2 which has just been launched at 21p per kWh offering.

If you don’t want to switch your energy supplier, your only choice is Pozitive Energy’s SEG tariff, which currently pays all solar generators only 5p per kWh.

Understanding Export Tariffs: Beyond the SEG

The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) scheme was introduced by the UK government to incentivize small-scale solar energy producers. Under this initiative, energy suppliers with a customer base exceeding 150,000 are mandated to pay for the surplus solar electricity fed into the National Grid.

While the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) scheme has been a cornerstone in fostering solar adoption, the terminology has evolved over time. The term “SEG” is now commonly used to encompass all export tariffs, regardless of whether they are officially part of the government’s scheme. Given that these tariffs serve the same fundamental purpose, we have included a comprehensive overview of all available options in our guide.

You should note that your current energy supplier does not need to be your Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) Scheme tariff supplier – these can be two separate companies, except for Ecotricity & 100Green as they don’t actually have true SEG tariffs. Any energy suppliers who are part of the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) scheme are obliged to offer you a SEG tariff, and this can be either fixed or variable; with the terms and conditions being set by the energy supplier. Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) Scheme tariffs can change over time, so be sure to carry out regular checks on whether your SEG tariff is still competitive.

Frequently Asked Questions about the SEG scheme

What is the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) scheme?

The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) scheme enables small-scale low-carbon generators, like homeowners, to receive payments from electricity suppliers for electricity exported to the National Grid, providing certain criteria are met.

Is the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) scheme worth it?

The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) is a good idea. It forces energy suppliers to financially reward consumers who send their excess renewable energy back to the National Grid, which makes the UK’s electricity cleaner, greener and cheaper. However, its fatal flaw is that energy companies can pay any amount for your energy as there is no standard rate.

Who pays the best Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) tariff?

Who Offers the Best SEG Rates? At present, energy supplier Good Energy offers the best SEG tariff export rate in the UK. They pay 40p for every kWh you provide from your solar or another renewable system to the National Grid. The catch with Good Energy is the fact that you have to be a Good Energy customer who has had solar panels and battery installed by the Good Energy solar installers. otherwise its SEG tariff for customers who have their own installers is only 15p kWh.

Can I sell electricity back to the National Grid?

If you generate renewable electricity in your home or business, you can feed back into the National Grid any electricity that you don’t use. Under the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) scheme you will be paid for every unit (kWh) of electricity that you feed back to the National Grid. You will need to have your solar PV system installed by a MCS Certified Solar PV (Panels) Installer like NXTGEN Energy, as you are required to have an MCS Certificate. An MCS Certificate proves that your Solar PV System has been correctly installed to MCS standards.

Who pays the most for solar electricity?

This, of course, is on top of the lower energy bills that you should be able to enjoy as a result of your solar energy investment. Currently Good Energy pays the best rate for excess solar energy exported back to the National Grid at a rate of 40p per kWh. E (Gas & Electricity) pays the lowest at 1p per kWh.
